In the early nineties, in an effort to provide his dog with better shelter, an inventor recognized the potential for using recycled polyethylene in providing a safe, comfortable dog box. Not only was this plastic lumber waterproof and easy to work with, but it was virtually maintenance-free as well. The dog boxes were insulated, waterproof, had a removable roof and contained a floor. They were easy to clean and kept their appearance for years. They never rotted or splintered, and never needed painting. The material, then known generically as poly-lumber, was fabricated of new, unused milk jugs, which, for one reason or another, would not be used to hold milk. Recycling this material not only kept it out of the waste stream but was the start of the plastic lumber revolution.

Combining the dog box with a unique chain-link kennel, gave birth to a business which soon had orders coming in every day. As the business grew and materials were purchased in larger quantities, that inventory was made available to other manufacturers and contractors in the area.

At that time, the plastic lumber was being used in the fabrication of lawn furniture, birdhouses and feeders, in building trim, railing and decking. There seemed to be no end to the use of this product in non-structural applications.

As the company, then known as Quality Fencing & Supply, grew and many more products were added, it became prudent for the company to be divided into three divisions: one specializing in vinyl fencing, another in chain-link fencing and kennels, and, finally, one which distributed maintenance-free decking and poly-lumber.

Today Universal Poly Products, LLC is the area’s most complete source for maintenance-free decking and supplies as well as for the original plastic lumber now known as Evolve™ by Renew Plastics. Other compatible products have been added to the company’s inventory including polyethylene sheeting, deck installation screws, hidden fasteners, and of greatest importance, the newest cellular PVC composite decking material.

In the decking group are profiles in tongue and groove by Universal Deck™, square edge by Azek™, fascia and trim. Also added recently is a 100% cellular PVC product known as Brahma Board by Brahma Building Products, which is ideal for decking, fascia and trim.
The original plastic lumber product has been improved and includes a decking board in both tongue and groove and square edge profiles with a wood grain non-slip surface. These products have proven especially effective where covered porches are replaced.

In a year’s period of time, thousands of square feet of decking pass through the Universal Poly Products warehouse doors.
